HANDLING LIFE CHALLENGES

Have you ever been faced with a challenge in life and after resolving the issue, you look back and are amazed at the strength you found to get through this difficult period? We often rise to the challenge and demonstrate a resilience we never knew we had. Difficult times force us to “wake up” and get conscious, opening our soul to new ideas to help us improve our current situation.
We are often unaware of our hidden strengths and talents that exist within us, waiting to be utilized. Our life challenges help us discover these character strengths, bringing them out into the open, and forcing us to let go of the limited way that we may have been thinking about ourselves in the past. Instead we become aware of our true capabilities. This growth process isn’t easy, and for our subconscious it can be overwhelming, but when the soul takes charge and begins to make a plan to resolve the situation, the subconscious’s anxiety is relieved and we begin to utilize more of our true potential.
Quite often we already have an idea in the back of our mind of how this stressful issue can be resolved, but we’ve been reluctant to make a change, hoping that somehow the problem will go away. Hoping something will just go away does not resolve any issue. This is the subconscious’s way of avoiding it. Instead we must get conscious and take some action. I’ve talked with people who are having difficulties and when I’ve asked them what they think they can do about it, they often say, “Well, I don’t know. But I was thinking that maybe I could do … this or that.” They already have a solution, but following through on it takes great courage, which the soul must provide.
Anytime we’re making a change in our lives, our subconscious can be fearful or anxious until we help it follow our new plan. Then with our guidance and assistance, the fear will dissolve and its anxieties relieved as it sees life improving. But this requires our soul’s thought to originate the plan in the first place, and then patience, discipline, love and repetition with our subconscious, in order to follow through with the change.
Looking at the challenge as an opportunity for growth will be helpful. Only the soul is able to see life from this perspective, but this viewpoint can help us move forward rather than feeling defeated. Rather than being overwhelmed by a situation, which is what the subconscious tends to feel, the soul can see it as another life project that needs to be managed. Whether it’s a leak in our plumbing or time for us to change jobs, the soul can formulate a plan to fix the problem or improve our current life circumstance.
Haven’t you ever gone through a situation that you felt was negative at the time, but afterwards realized it was actually to your benefit? I’ve heard people describe losing a job, which was a very stressful experience, but then finding a new job that turned out to be a much better opportunity than where they were before. They may never have left the old one behind without this “push” and would have missed a great chance to better their lives. When we are open to improving ourselves, the universe often gives us a “push” in the right direction to help us continue to grow.
Sometimes all we need is a little encouragement to help us make a change. We may be familiar with the importance of this kind of support if we’ve provided encouragement to others who are going through difficult life changes. We can reassure our friend that they will get through this challenge, point out their strengths and inner resources that will help them to continue, remind them that they have our support and love, and help them see that their life will be better as a result of their efforts. We need to provide this same kind of encouragement for ourselves. We must reassure our subconscious of these same ideas of love and support and strength that we provided for our friend.
Visualizations can also be helpful during life challenges. Visualizing the problem as already resolved can help relieve the subconscious’s anxiety by giving it a glimpse of its improved life and can help keep it motivated as it continues to follow our plan, knowing that its time and efforts will be rewarded.
While still in the midst of a life change, it’s a good idea to provide some fun for the subconscious, something totally removed from the stressful situation where it gets time to relax and enjoy itself. You may have to push yourself to do this, for the subconscious may feel worn out and not feel like doing anything at all, but if you think about the kinds of things you’ve enjoyed in the past and include them in your activities, your subconscious will be grateful. Whether it’s taking a walk, listening to music, getting out in nature, going to a movie or whatever you like to do, the subconscious will feel better as a result. These activities help us see that life goes on and provide some healing time away from the stress.
Finally, it’s sometimes a matter of how we’re viewing the situation that can make a difference. Someone was recently sharing a challenging situation she was encountering at work. While not seeking to solve her particular problem, another person spoke of changing his perspective on an activity he had looked at in the past as challenging and a bit stressful. Instead of resisting a long commute he made once a month, he decided to look at it in a different way and enjoy himself. He reminded himself this drive gave him the opportunity to share time with two friends who accompanied him on his trips. It became an enjoyable activity then, instead of a stressful task. We can often change our subconscious’s viewpoint on a situation, simply by sharing the soul’s perspective.
